Technical conditions
1. Product designation
Electric band heaters are widely used, especially in: the plastics and rubber industry, the mechanical engineering industry, the chemical industry, the food industry, the paper and packaging technology. Generally, it involves heating metal cylindrical surfaces in a dry environment.
2. Basic characteristics
The heat source is a resistance heating coil placed either in ceramic insulating segments or a flat heating coil between layers of industrial mica. According to this internal arrangement, we distinguish between ceramic and mica heating bands. The outer casing is usually made of stainless steel ground sheets. The whole is bent to the required diameter and equipped with tightening elements for pressing onto the heated cylindrical surfaces, because good pressure is one of the decisive parameters in contact heating. If this heating part is flat, it is a heating plate, which then takes on its basic power and temperature properties according to the initial internal structure described above. The connection of the power cable to the heating part is important, which is usually made using a ceramic terminal block, which is inside a stainless steel protective box, attached to the outer casing of the heating band. The other end of the power cable for electrical connection can be equipped with suitable plugs.
3. Technical parameters
Dimensions, nominal voltage and power values and materials of selected types are listed on the webside. However, in total, there are already hundreds of types of band heaters, their segments and plate heaters in our range today. A drawing of the assembly containing the main data can be sent on request. An important parameter is the maximum power surface load of the band heater, which is selected according to the heated material, the required temperature and other ambient conditions and which essentially determines which type of band heater can be used. The power load values are listed in the tables on the webside. The supply voltage is most often 1x230 VAC, 3x400/Y VAC, 3x400/D VAC, or 115 V, according to the standard network.
4. Assembly and installation of band heaters
- Before installation, check that the heating element or element assembly, connection area, electrical outlet, etc. have not been damaged during transport or handling.
- Under no circumstances must the operator carry the band or plate heaters only by the wires, or the cables or wires be tensioned after installation.
- Install the band and plate heaters on cleaned surfaces without coarse dirt, without metal shavings or dust, cleaned of liquids and lubricants. There is a risk of dirt baking onto the surface of the heating element. This is particularly dangerous for ceramic band and plate heaters, as there is a risk of dirt flowing between the ceramic parts around the resistance heating spiral.
- No liquid must flow into the band and plate heaters.
- Electrical connection or connection of multiple elements may only be carried out by a worker with the appropriate qualifications according to Decree 50/78 Coll. The connection must comply with the valid safety regulations for the given electrical equipment in a specific industrial environment. In particular, it is necessary to ensure proper grounding of the heating element frame/shell. Before putting the heating element into operation, it is necessary to carry out an inspection according to the applicable regulations.
- Mica plate heaters without holes for attachment must be pressed evenly over the entire surface, e.g. with a pressure plate. For mica plate heaters with holes for attachment of the total thickness up to 5 mm, it is necessary to use large-format washers or a pressure plate. If the plate heater has a thick distribution plate, it is enough to screw the plate heater only in the screw holes with the appropriate washer under the screw head.
- Mica band heater must be installed according to the design. If it is a one-piece band heater, it is necessary to slide this band onto the heated part from the front (like a ring on a finger). The band heater cannot be stretched and applied across the diameter. There is a risk of damage to the layers or the resistance winding (spiral). If the band heater is two- or multi-part, its parts are placed on the diameter gradually.
- Tighten the screws carefully and evenly over the entire surface. Tightening must be checked after heating. If the screws are loose, it is necessary to tighten them again.
- The position of the electrical box, electrical outlet, etc. must be in the coldest zone around the band heater. The temperature of the box must not exceed +200 °C..
5. Operation and maintenance of band heaters
Band heaters in industrial applications may only be operated by trained personnel. Band heaters must not be manipulated while switched on. Band heaters are usually designed so that their operation does not require special maintenance. There are many types and designs with completely different methods of use. The general principles of operation and maintenance of band heaters include:
- Protect the entire body of the band heater against moisture and mechanical damage.
- Never manipulate the bands and plates by the electrical power cable, or mechanically stress the electrical connection elements. These parts are used exclusively for electrical connection, never for mechanical operations.
- Band heaters a low degree of electrical protection due to their design principle. Their surface must never be poured with liquid, etc.
- The heating part must never touch the insulation area or be under the insulation, it may only be in the area designated for heating.
- Avoid excessive cycling during controlled operation.
- Prevent dirt from settling on the surface of the band heater - this could lead to changes in heat dissipation, or dirt could penetrate the internal parts of the band, which could even lead to a short circuit.
- Avoid vibrations and mechanical shocks.
- Prevent various mechanical damages.
- Prevent possible corrosion and other chemical stress on the heater surface.
6. Storage
Band and plate heaters must be stored in a dry environment. The maximum relative humidity in the storage room can reach 70%. During longer storage or longer shutdown of band heaters, it is necessary to verify their satisfactory insulation condition. If the result does not comply with the requirements, it is necessary to dry the bands with an external heat source at a temperature of 150-160 °C (if the design of the specific type allows it) for at least 5 hours, until the required parameters are achieved. In case of any damage to a part of the band or plate heater, it is necessary to replace the entire product. Before dismantling, the band heater must be disconnected from the power source.
7. Technical standards
Electric band and plate heaters meet the requirements of ČSN EN 60 335-1. The product surface is marked with the name of the manufacturer, the type of heating element, the rated voltage and power input, the date of manufacture usually in the month-year format, and the CE mark. The tolerance of the rated power input is in accordance with ČSN EN 60 335-1 in the range of +5/-10%. The heating elements are intended for normal environments, not for explosive environments Ex. The band and plate heaters are manufactured in such a way that their main properties, especially power input and dimensions, do not change after prolonged use under the same operating conditions. The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes that do not affect the function and use. New designs of band and plate heaters are possible after agreement with the producer.
